10 Food Additives To Avoid

Do you ever wonder what those long words are on your food labels?   They are food additives!  Some of those words are longer than the names of some countries …. and just as foreign sounding!

You hear so much hype about what foods to eat but what about WHAT TO AVOID…specifically, what are the food additives you should avoid?

10 FOOD ADDITIVES TO AVOID & WHY

These are what manufactures add to food to make them taste good, appear better and have the textures we have grown to expect.  These are NOT good for our bodies and are a huge contributor to our health problems!  Here are the top 10 food additives to avoid with reasons why to avoid them.
Note: there is much research to give evidence for the below information (see blue hyperlinks within description).
  1. Monosodium Glutamate (msg / e621) – MSG is one of the worst food additives on the market and is used in canned soups, crackers, meats, salad dressings, frozen dinners and much more. It’s found in your local supermarket and restaurants, in your child’s school cafeteria and, amazingly, even in baby food and infant formula.  MSG is an excitotoxin, which means it overexcites your cells to the point of damage or death, causing brain damage to varying degrees — and potentially even triggering or worsening learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and more  According to Dr. Mercola, this additive can seriously damage your health.   nutrition-label-12.17
  2. High fructose corn syrup or glucose / fructose  – This is a common sweetener found in sodas and fruit flavored drinks. As use of high-fructose corn syrup has increased, so have levels of obesity and related health problems.
  3. Artificial sweeteners – Sweeteners such as Splenda appear in everything from yogurt to baked goods to drinks.  According to Dr. Mercola, they are NOT healthy and NOT safe!
  4. Common food dyes – In Europe, foods with dyes get Warning on the label: “Products with Yellow 5, Red 40, Other Dyes “May Have an Adverse Effect on Activity and Attention in Children”.  But in the US the FDA has deemed these dyed foods not worthy of a any type of warning?  Five food colorings still on the market are linked with cancer in animal testing. Blue 1 and 2, found in beverages, candy, baked goods and pet food, have been linked to cancer in mice. Red 3, used to dye cherries, fruit cocktail, candy, and baked goods, has been shown to cause thyroid tumors in rats. Green 3, added to candy and beverages, has been linked to bladder cancer. The widely used yellow 6, added to beverages, sausage, gelatin, baked goods, and candy, has been linked to tumors of the adrenal gland and kidney.
  5. Trans fat –  Trans fat in foods is as bad as it gets!   Scientists’ warning: A long-awaited federal report on trans fat, a processed fat pervasive in cookies, crackers and fast food, finds there is no safe level of trans-fats!  According to researchers at the University of Alberta, they have discovered even worse news attributable to trans fats and saturated fats — they can also wreak havoc with the electricity in your heart, worsening the severity of heart attacks and increasing the risk of death.
  6. BHA and BHT  -Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydrozyttoluene are used to preserve common household foods. They are found in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. They are oxidants, which form potentially cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body.  Antioxidants BHA (E320) and BHT (E321) have been identified as a possible cause of local skin reactions.
  7. Sodium Nitrate / Sodium Nitrite – This is a preservative, coloring, and flavoring commonly added to bacon, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meats, smoked fish, and corned beef. Studies have linked eating it to various types of cancer.  Sodium nitrite is a dangerous, cancer-causing ingredient that has no place in the human food supply. The USDA actually tried to ban sodium nitrite in the 1970’s but unfortunately was stopped by the meat processing industry, which relies on the ingredient as a color fixer to make foods look more visually appealing.
  8. Potassium Bromate – Potassium bromate is used as an additive to increase volume in some white flour, breads, and rolls. It is known to cause cancer in animals, and even small amounts in bread can create a risk for humans.  California must carry a warning label if potassium bromate has been used. Find out why.
  9. Sodium Sulfite (e221) – WARNING:  Harmful IF SWALLOWED. MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC REACTION AND BREATHING. DIFFICULTIES.  This is a preservative used in processed foods. People who are sulfite sensitive can experience headaches, breathing problems, and rashes. In severe cases, sulfites can actually cause death.
  10. Sulfer Dioxide (e220) – Sulphur additives are toxic and in the U.S., they have been prohibited in raw fruit and vegetables. Adverse reactions include bronchial problems, low blood pressure, and anaphylactic shock.  You can read the public warning by the government.
As you read this list, you must ask yourself….why are US manufacturers still adding them to our food?  Many other countries give warning labels for the same things we consume daily!
